Registers of Electors, 1889 - 1951 (with gaps)
An incomplete series of printed Voters Lists / Registers Electors for County Galway includes registers created in 19th century, lists of all those eligible to vote in parliamentary or local government elections in a particular area. The lists were created annually to record the names of eligible voters and their reason for eligibility, such as their residence or ownership of a property.
The early lists generally record the name of Barony, name of each person on the Register, place of abode, nature of qualification (e.g., rated occupier or householder), and townland or other denomination, street, lane or other. Some may include handwritten supplemental lists on a pre-printed form, or printed lists signed by Clerk of the Union or District Court and a Justice of the Peace for the County. Some lists, in particular those from c. 1910 onwards, include annotations and revisions indicating, for instance, that they were working copies, used to verify information for the next year's register.
Form 11 is a Supplemental List of Male Persons 'rated in the last Rate under the Acts for the Relief of the Destitute Poor as the occupiers of lands, tenements or Hereditaments, rated separately or together, at the net Annual Value of Ten Pounds or upwards, ....and all which occupiers have on or before the first day of July in this year paid all Poor Rates...'.
Form 12 is a Supplemental list of male persons, who are ‘inhabitant occupiers as owners or tenants of dwelling houses within the Polling District, .... for which dwelling houses all Poor Rate due has been paid...'.
The early (1889-1922 ??) Electoral Lists were issued on 31st December and were valid for the following calendar year. Following the establishment of the Irish Free State and the enactment of the Electoral Act of 1923, the Registers commencement date was the 1st day of June, annually.
There were some changes to county borders as a result of the Local Government (Ireland) Act of 1898. For instance, the Galway Electoral Divisions of Owenbrin and Ballinchalla transferred to County Mayo. The electoral division of Rosmoylan transferred to County Roscommon, and the electoral divisions of Drummaan, Inishcaltra North and Mountshannon transferred to County Clare. A portion of the Urban Sanitary District of Ballinasloe (parts of) in the County Roscommon were added to County Galway, including the townlands of Ashford, Atticorra, Cleaghbeg, Cleaghgarve, Creagh, Glentaun (Glenthane), Kilgarve (Killgorrive), Parkmore, Portnick, Rooaun (Rouane) and Townparks (https://www.swilson.info/wp/?p=1738).
Spellings are as they appear in the lists.
