Correspondence between Solicitors & Portumna and District Development Co. Ltd (D H Kearns), GCC and others relating to the purchase of tolls from Estate of Earl Harewood.
Includes holograph letter from the Bishop of Clonfert Rev. Dr Dignan to Co. Manager (C I Flynn) regarding the possibility of siting a new church on the Fairgreen site, if an alternative site for fairs can be acquired (19 Oct 1948). - Notice of particulars of Tolls at Fairs (30 Oct 1948).
- Correspondence regarding derelict site (1949.)
- Letter from Solicitors to GCC advising that Mr S ‘holds under a verbal agreement at a rent of £10, and this rent entitled him to hold a market on Saturdays and to use of the weighbridge on that day…'(17 Aug 1949), with GCC responding that it ‘must get clear possession of the property…’(23 Aug 1949). Stronge advised GCC he was ‘a yearly tenant on this Estate of the market Tolls since July 1919’ (14/07/1919).
- MO No. 14822, approving GCC’s purchase from the Harewood Estate the Fairgreen, Weigh bridge, right to collect tolls & customs and derelict site in the townland of Portumna Demesne containing 10 areas, 2 roods & 34 perches for £800. (12 Nov 1949).
- Sale closed (24 Aug 1950).
- Correspondence regarding the use of Fairgreen for events, such as circus (John Duffy & Sons, the People’s Circus), as a car park, and right of way access during the building of a hotel (Westpark Hotel) (see for instance 6 Nov 1974). - Correspondence relating to trespassers (3 Mar 1975).
- Letter from Fr P Egan, parish priest to GCC indicating that ‘since the erection of a mart in the town’, the Fairgreen has fallen into disuse, and points out that the site would be ideally placed for a new national school (29 Mar 1975).
- 1976 - request for use of Fairgreen as site for new National school.
