Archival historyThough the Registers are the property of the County Council they remain until completed with the local caretakers. However, there is a poor return record of completed registers to the Council. The archives survey of 1996 (completed by National Archives on behalf of Dept of Environment) and Survey of 2000 completed by a Temporary Archivist employed by Galway County Council did not find any existing Registers in the Council's collection.
Between 2001 and 2005 in a bid to instigate the return of completed registers to the County Council the Archivist recommended the issue of a letter to all caretakers requesting their return. The Environment Section issued the letter & followed up. By 2005 with the aid of the Internal Auditor the Registers of Interment listed here were returned to Galway County Council. In some instances a copy remains with the local caretaker.
Since 2006 a small quantity of registers were transferred to the Archives, generally via the Environment Section (such as the register of Moyrus (GC/Env2/103)), and others maybe acquired direct from the caretaker, such as Gortganny (GC/ENV2/37B).
Galway County Council's Environment Section printed replacement Registers for the caretakers.
